You say yes.24 hours later, you have seen 60 patients, you haven't slept, the generator failed twice, the nurse is asking you to do what you were not trained to do, and you are leaving with N20,000 that will barely fuel your car back home.Welcome to the ₦20,000 locum trap. 1. Why We Accept It

For Doctors: One mistake after 18 hours without sleep can cost you your license. MDCN will not accept "I was tired because it was ₦20k locum" as a defense. Your license is worth millions, not ₦20k.

For Pharmacists: You dispense for 100 patients alone in 24 hours. One wrong labeling because of fatigue and you are in a police station explaining why you dispensed the wrong dose. PCN will ask you: why did you work under that condition?

3. Why Hospitals Offer N20,000

Let's be fair to hospital owners too. Many are struggling. Running a hospital in Nigeria with fuel at N1,450+, drugs are expensive, patients can't pay.So they cut costs where they can - locum fees.Some also believe: There are many unemployed doctors/pharmacists, someone will take it.And they are right. Someone always takes it. That's why the trap continues.But cheap locum is expensive for the hospital too. A tired, underpaid locum will miss a diagnosis, will be rude to patients, will not come back. The hospital loses patients and reputation, which costs far more than ₦40,000.

4. How to Break Free From the Trap (The ProLocum Standard)

2. Is there accommodation and feeding? (If not, add it to your fee)
3. Is there a written agreement? (If it's just WhatsApp, you have no protection)

c) Learn to Say No With Professionalism:
Don't just say Your money is too small. Say Thank you for the opportunity. For a 24-hour cover with the workload described, my rate is N45,000. I can also do 12 hours for N25,000. Let me know if that works.You will be shocked how many hospitals will negotiate when you are professional and firm.
